Roots Unearthed (Kökleri Dışarıda)

FILM REVIEW WORKSHOP: tribute to the fading culture and identity of rural communities seeks to memorialise the fleeting beauty of life - from the PÖFF Shorts section of the 28th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival

LIVE FROM THE INDUSTRY@TALLINN & BALTIC EVENT

Our protagonist provokes audiences with a beautiful reflection about lost stories and traditions: “It seems that roots exist in one’s soul, and each one carries centuries-old stories”.

Embarking on a journey of rediscover of his ancestral lands, our lead hears echoes of a past he never experienced. Through his encounters with the elders of his native village, he learns about the fragility and beauty of life. Roots Unearthed is a tribute to the fading culture and identity of rural communities.

Exquisitely shot from the perspective of a character we never see, the film is guided by his soothing, melancholic voice. This choice deepens the intimacy of the narrative, drawing attention to the protagonist’s emotional disconnection from his heritage. A pivotal moment occurs in the opening scene, when a train metaphorically carries both the character and the audience from the present into the past. Through the windows, snow-covered mountains unfold, symbolising a higher spirituality and sense of self, while the train’s plunge into a dark tunnel marks the journey into the unknown.

The unfolding story is brought to life through intimate encounters with elderly villagers. Close-ups of our protagonist as he interacts with strangers evoke a serene stillness. These shots serve to preserve and to memorialise the fleeting beauty of life. Majestic landscapes, vast open fields, and ancient trees that have endured the test of time stand in stark contrast to the crumbling buildings of a once-thriving village, representing the quiet loss of culture and identity.

An elderly villager reflects on two types of death – of the body and of the soul -, in one of the film’s most touching scenes. He explains that while physical death is inevitable, the loss of purpose, identity, and connection to one’s roots can be even more tragic. This profound reflection highlights the film’s central theme: heritage as a vital source of meaning.

The narrative closes with the poignant line: “perhaps what truly matters is the ability to hear those stories carried by the roots”. It invites viewers to reconnect with their own heritage, to rekindle a forgotten past. The preservation of stories and traditions create a sense of continuity, purpose, and belonging.

Unearthed Roots shows in the PÖFF Shorts section of the 28th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. This review was written as part of the Film Review Workshop conducted on November 10th, 2024.
