H.M. Ryan
Philadelphia publisher and novelist with a penchant for the surreal and the sentimental
Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, H.M. Ryan knows intimately the close relationship between triumph and heartbreak from being a Philadelphia sports fan. Film is in his blood: his parents’ first date was seeing the Richard Benjamin’s My Favourite Year (1982), starring Peter O’Toole and Mark Linn-Baker in theatres.
A movie-obsessive since first seeing Star Wars as a child, Ryan has a deep affection for the surreal and the sentimental alike. He finds himself watching the ending to All That Jazz (Bob Fosse, 1979) at least twice a week. Other favourites include Boogie Nights (Paul Thomas Anderson, 1997), Paris, Texas (Wim Wenders, 1984), and, thanks to his equally film-loving father, Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962) and Amadeus (Milos Forman, 1984).
He’s a runner, having recently completed the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia which, if you ask him if he’s doing again next year, will result in him crying in front of you (but he most certainly will). He’s the proud father to a large terrier mix named Lady, who despite being extraordinarily clumsy is the most loving dog on the planet.
He also regularly writes about the long-term storytelling of Japanese professional wrestling at Monthly Puroresu, and in addition to his Philadelphia sports fandom, is a fan of Manchester United since childhood, thanks in no small part to David Beckham’s hair.
So obsessed with storytelling is Ryan that in 2023, he founded Cosmorama, a media and publishing company dedicated to producing art across genres and mediums, and published his debut novel, Jinky, through the company that same year. You can find more info and over 50 short stories written by creatives from around the world at cosmorama.site.
Feel free to email Ryan at [email protected]. He tends to be quite chatty once you get him going.
