Four dirty cowboy movies

Mariano Garcia remembers four films about the Wild West, the downright thought-provoking creations that you should never forget!

The films below are listed in alphabetical order. Because it’s simply impossible to rank these dirty gems!

.

1. Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino, 2012):

A bold and provocative Western that reimagines the genre through the lens of American slavery. The film combines elements of spaghetti Westerns, blaxploitation, and historical drama in order to create a unique and compelling narrative about revenge, freedom, and justice.

The plot centers on Django, a former slave who, accompanied by a German bounty hunter, sets out in search of his wife. Their journey through the pre-war United States reveals the brutal reality of slave society. Django gradually transforms from a slave into a confident and fearless gunman, ready to do anything to save his beloved. The climax is a confrontation with the charismatic and ruthless plantation owner who owns Django’s wife. The film balances brutality and dark humour, creating a vivid and memorable picture of the American South, filled with colorful characters and unexpected plot twists.

2. True Grit (Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, 2010):

A classic Western reimagined by the Coen brothers, this film explores themes of revenge, coming of age, and true courage. It combines the harsh reality of the Wild West with subtle humor and deep emotional undertones, creating a multifaceted narrative about human resilience and justice.

At the center of the plot is young Mattie Ross, who hires the stern Marshal Rooster Cogburn to capture her father’s killer. Their unusual duo is joined by a cocky Texas Ranger, and together they embark on a dangerous journey through Indian territory. As the story unfolds, an unexpected bond develops between the characters, and Mattie shows a determination and courage beyond her years. Harsh trials and encounters with colorful characters reveal the personalities of the main characters, leading to a tense climax. The film masterfully recreates the atmosphere of the Wild West, combining breathtaking landscapes with intriguing dialogue and unexpected plot twists.

.

3. Old Henry (Potsy Ponciroli, 2012; pictured at the top of this article):

A tense Western that explores the themes of redemption and hidden pasts against the backdrop of the harsh Wild West. The film reimagines classic elements of the genre, creating an intriguing story about a man forced to return to his forgotten craft.

Henry, a modest farmer, leads a quiet life with his son until he finds a wounded stranger with a bag of money. His decision to take him in leads to unexpected consequences: a group of dangerous men calling themselves sheriffs arrive at the farm in search of the criminal. Henry finds himself drawn into a dangerous game where he must protect his family and uncover the secrets of his own past. Events unfold rapidly, revealing the true nature of the main character and calling into question his quiet farming life.

.

4. The Hateful Eight (Quentin Tarantino, 2016):

A dark and tense Western that explores themes of mistrust, betrayal, and human nature in extreme conditions. The film combines elements of detective and psychological thriller, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s classic productions set in the Wild West.

The action takes place in a snowbound cabin, where eight colourful characters are sheltering from a blizzard. Among them are a bounty hunter, his captive, a sheriff, an executioner, and other mysterious figures. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that not all of them ended up in the same place by accident. The mounting tension, mutual suspicions, and hidden motives of each character create an explosive situation. Skillfully constructed dialogues and unexpected plot twists keep the viewer in constant suspense, leading to a bloody denouement.
