Furiosa could lead to an influx of post-apocalyptic content

Martin Escribador suggests that the latest entry to the Mad Max franchise will have a widespread impact far beyond the film industry, in many other fields of entertainment

The eagerly awaited Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has finally hit cinemas, and the prequel could mark the start of a new era for George Miller’s post-apocalyptic franchise. The new offering is the origin story for Charlize Theron’s Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road, this time played by the younger Anya Taylor-Joy.

There are already indications that there will be a rise in post-apocalyptic content across the entertainment industry, with Miller’s offering perhaps having an influence on this.

Dystopia: Rebel Road, inspired by Furiosa

There are often trending genres in popular culture, and the online casino sector is a good place to get an indication of what’s hot in the current climate. One of the newest online slots at Paddy Power is Dystopia: Rebel Road, which is clearly heavily inspired by the Mad Max franchise. The game features imagery of a ravaged city covered in dust and surrounded by smog. There are few survivors, who have to battle it out over limited resources. There’s no doubt that developer Octoplay released this to capitalize on the potential hype of Furiosa.

Elsewhere in the entertainment industry, there have been a few recent post-apocalyptic titles. The most recent one was Amazon’s adaptation of Fallout, which follows a similar theme to Mad Max. The series was met with critical acclaim and attracted high viewing figures for the streaming service. Amazon may have timed the release of this offering purposefully to coincide closely with Furiosa’s cinematic debut.

Due to the success of these offerings set in ravaged wastelands, there could be many more offerings to come on television and in the iGaming sector. A second season of Fallout has already been confirmed, meaning that the genre could be at the forefront of streaming for some time.

New Mad Max offering popular with critics

Furiosa has received a plethora of strong reviews, with critics praising everything from the settings to the character portrayals. Taylor-Joy’s career is continuing to go from strength to strength, and she has now proven herself as a capable leading lady. Chris Hemsworth was also lauded for his performance, with the Australian showing his range and taking on a role different from his usual type. According to an article in Empire, Hemsworth’s Dementus is a horrible villain. Others have described him as the perfect antithesis of Max Rockatansky.

Unfortunately, the box office returns for Furiosa haven’t been as strong as Warner Bros. Pictures had hoped. In fact, there’s a chance that it could end up being a box office bomb due to high production costs resulting in a total budget of $168 million dollars. This could have a negative influence on whether Warner Bros. decides to go ahead with any other potential Mad Max sequels or spinoffs.

Regardless of whether there is any more content to come in the Mad Max franchise or not, there could still be a rise in post-apocalyptic content in the entertainment industry over the next few years. The genre seems to be popular now, and developers will seek to benefit from this trend.
