Why film storytelling and strategy matter for the gaming industry

Mariano Garcia investigates the connection between gaming and the film industry, while highlighting some of the films from which we can all learn a few valuable lessons!

The gaming industry is one that has had a fascinating evolution over the years. It is becoming increasingly popular, respected, and praised, going from what was once considered a niche hobby to a form of entertainment on par with film, television, and music. This is because gaming provides a fully immersive experience, utilises cutting-edge technology, and embraces creative storytelling to create compelling narratives that can engage players and provide a form of escapism. Additionally, strategic thinking is a key element of many games that adds to the allure. With this in mind, this post will explore the role of storytelling and strategy in the gaming industry and how they contribute to its success.

.

The role Of storytelling

Storytelling has evolved in the video game industry, which has played a critical role in the growth and success of the industry in recent years. Historically, games had no or little backstory and would be games that people could just pick up and play, such as Pong and Pac-Man. These days, video games have rich, epic storylines that are comparable to Hollywood films, such as the Grand Theft Auto (Ron Roward, 1977; pictured above), and Red Dead Redemption series. Storytelling helps to create an immersive gaming experience that draws players in and keeps them hooked, so this is a key component of video games by providing a sense of purpose and progression.

.

The role of strategy

Games throughout history that rely on strategy have always retained popularity. Chess is the perfect example of this as a historic game that has remained hugely popular and even saw a huge surge in popularity during the pandemic. Many modern games require the use of strategy, which allows players to put their decision-making and critical-thinking skills to the test. Strategic gameplay can make games more engaging as well as rewarding, whether this is using a strategy in a football game, a puzzle game, or first-person shooter. Strategy can also test players’ abilities and encourage people to join communities to discuss games and how to progress.

The growth Of online casino games

In recent years, online casino games have become hugely popular, and many combine both storytelling and strategy to create immersive, engaging, and gripping games. Popular casinos like Spin Casino have a huge selection of slot games to choose from, including many with popular film themes. This includes games like Bridesmaids (Paul Feig, 2011), the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2008), and Planet of the Apes (Franklin J Schaffner, 1968). While slot games are primarily a game of luck, many have bonus rounds, free spins, and other features that give the player greater control and keep them hooked.

It has been incredible to see the growth of the gaming industry and how it is now on par with film, television, and music in terms of respect and appreciation. The art of storytelling and strategic gameplay have been critical to this as these elements help to create more immersive, engaging, and rewarding experiences for players. It will be intriguing to see what the future holds as games become even more immersive and engaging, particularly with the rise of new technologies like VR and AI.
